(draft version) RETROLux Louver System’s shaped louvers redirect sunlight, reflecting heat and aiming the remaining light toward the ceiling while providing glare protection, privacy, and shading.

System Performance

(draft version) RETROLux uses a system of shaped Venetian Blinds to redirect sunlight. The outer half of the louvers are sharply bent, reflecting high-angled light and its associated heat, back outside. The inner half is a flat angled section, reflecting lower angles of light towards the ceiling of the room. RETROLux systems have two types of louvers: sharply-angled ones (RETROLux U) for the lower half of the pane as well as flatter louvers (RETROLux O) for the higher section, aiming light distinctly toward the ceiling at a distance up to 6m from the window. This design blocks almost all light from high angles, creating a necessity for electric lights, but provides glare protection from direct light. The light that is transmitted only reflects off of one surface, and therefore its glare is only partially reduced by this system. Because the blinds can be turned, it is also possible to shade the room, giving privacy to the user. For a more advanced lighting analysis and project specific results, we recommend using the Lightsolve program (under development).

System Description

(draft version) RETROLux is a dynamic daylighting system consisting of a set of shaped louvers. Their upper surfaces are anodized or lacquered to create reflective surfaces, while the lower sides are white or anodized aluminum. The blinds are 50mm thick, though they can also be ordered as an 80mm (3.1”) product. RETROLux can be installed within a room, against the window, or within an existing insulating window. Maintenance requires a machine for washing the dynamic louvers, but is simpler for RETROLux systems installed within glass panes.
